The Designer Guide To Wardrobe Storage

No matter how tidy you intend on keeping your wardrobe, after much time and Zara sales, you could find yourself running out of space. A packed wardrobe not only looks unappealing, but it can cause stress seeing your shelves stuffed with clothes each morning. Whilst a bigger wardrobe may solve the problem, your room might not be large enough to provide you with that option in which case, it is time to be savvy!

Luckily, there are many ingenious ideas that can help utilise the space you have and keep on top of the order. To share her effective space saving ideas, we enlisted the help of Zoe Warren, interior designer at PriceYourJob.co.uk.

 1. Hang clothes vertically

If your wardrobe is narrow, a great way to save space is by hanging your clothes vertically. You can buy these hangers at retailers such as Amazon or create your own DIY version using silver drink can pulls and hangers. Simply loop the pull on one of the hangers and let it fall all the way down to the neck. You can then loop the top of the second hanger through the other side. This hack allows you to stack pieces together or even organise outfits ready for the next day.

2. Use baskets for the top of the wardrobe

If your wardrobe has even a small gap above it, you can fit in some storage boxes. It’s the perfect space to utilise seasonal clothes such as bikinis and jumpers and keep them neat and out the way. Use the height of your wardrobe to your benefit and purchase decorative baskets and boxes that match with the interior of your bedroom.

3. Add stacking boxes at the bottom

Just as you can use the top of your wardrobe, you can use the bottom. Separate your short and longer hanging garments so you have easy access to the floor space. Purchase some stacking boxes that can be arrange perfectly to fit the space and place items in such as shoes and knitwear. Opt for Perspex boxes to allow you to see what is inside.

4. Use dividers on shelves

Shelf space is used improperly when clothes get dumped in no order and left to crease. To make ultimate use of your shelves, use plastic dividers to separate stacks of clothes. Bulkier items such as denim jeans and cardigans will fold easily and keep their shape if they are stacked in a neat and tight pile.

5. Utilise the inside of wardrobe doors

Wardrobe doors often get missed; however, they hold great storage opportunities. In a standard wardrobe, a smart door hanger will provide a heap of extra space. It is a great opportunity to organise items which usually clutter a wardrobe such as belts, scarves and jewellery. A smart over the door hanger stays out of sight and is easy to maintain.

6. Use a tie hanger for strappy tops

During Summer, your strappy tops might make an appearance back to your wardrobe. Instead of piling them all on one hanger and causing intertwined straps, use a tie hanger for organisation.  This saves a lot of room in your wardrobe and provides ease when choosing which one to wear.

7. Clothing rail

If your wardrobe is extra small and you have some space in your bedroom, you might benefit from a freestanding clothing rail. These can be purchased from a range of retailers and gives you a heap of extra space. These are ideal for large coats and materials that easily crease such as satin. Additionally, as the rail is exposed you will be more inclined to keep your clothes tidy and organised.
